Growing to Understand the True Suffering of LGBTQ Individuals in Less Developed Countries Than Your Own
Categories: Grievances

America is slowly learning to accommodate the differences of others including, but not limited to the LGBTQ, but not every country is growing in such a humanitarian manner. LGBTQ is an abbreviation for: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning.

Shyam Selvadurai is a Colombo born Sri Lankan Canadian author who has achieved world acclaim for his unflinching expressions of disturbed truth in regards to the awful mistreatment of LGBTQ people growing up in Sri Lanka. Rising up to the forefront of a touchy topic with the production of his book Funny Boy, Shyam Selvadurai is the first Sri Lankan writer to be so bold as to comment on the abhorrent abuses and neglects of basic human rights that LGBTQ individuals are still currently facing in and around the Sri Lanka area. Shyam is taking it upon himself to bring attention to a huge problem and it is having good fortune of inspiring others to take equal time to enlighten people everywhere on what horrors are currently going on.

The Important Work of Equal Ground

A company by the name of EQUAL GROUND finished a pilot study not long ago that depicted just how scary the reality is. Bringing light to the dangerous gap in the constitution, EQUAL GROUND has made it their mission to set the record straight in pointing out that though there are addressed protections for people no matter their gender, religion, and cast/ethnicity, such rights to legal protection have not been extended in regards to the LGBTQ community. Technically, they should be included, but social hierarchy and ignorance has decreed informally that these protections are only to be granted to LGBTQ peoples who present in a cis-normative and hetero-normative manner.

Now, it’s important to remember that historically speaking both Buddhist and Hindu religions actually used to appreciate the wide array of gender and sexuality, assuming that these people were an invaluable part of society who brought an expanded world view and respect to the world order. Somehow, sadly, this has been lost in translation through the aging process of civilization and an ignorance has festered and turned into unprecedented phobias and hatred.

People Are Driven into Exile

EQUAL GROUND’s survey has also gone on to show some disgusting truths that make for the understandable response of so many LGBTQ people living in Sri Lanka who run away from everything they know to try and make homes in other countries like Selvadurai’s family did when he was 19. Not only are gay men and women fleeing the state, fearful of the imminent death they face if ever they are to return, but a surplus of transgender and transvestite individuals have opened up about being forced to perform sexual acts on police in order to not be taken into custody purely because of their differences.

In the end, it’s no surprise how many LGBTQ individuals self-destruct and that such a high percentage desperately claw for a safer place in a world outside the one they were brought up in. Not only has the situation of LGBTQ supporters not improved, but the climate catastrophe has not been mitigated.
